Angels Quest Respite Homes: The story so farGlenageary, DublinIn Autumn 2000, in partnership with St. John of Gods, the first Angels Quest home in Glenageary, Dublin which cost €950,000 was opened by Prince Charles. The 10-bed purpose built respite care facility for children was designed by Moloney O’Beirne & Partners, Architects and is staffed and run by St. John of God’s Carmona Services. Since opening, the Carmona Angels Quest Home, has provided eighty nine families in the South Dublin region with over three thousand respite days and nights. Tallaght, DublinThis 10 bed respite unit, also under the services of St. John of God, was opened in Tallaght in May 2004. The opening of this unit has brought great relief to a large number of families in this area, many of whom have never had a respite break from their caring responsibilities. Clane, KildareOver the past two years Angels Quest have been working in partnership with St John of Gods to fundraise for this project in Clane. County Kildare. At the recent Angels Quest Ball we gave 85,000 euro towards its completion. We are delighted to announce that the home opened it s doors to the special angels at the end of November 2006. It is a beautiful 5 bed room home with its own kitchen and dining facilities and a fine grounds for play and recreation and in line with the present strategy of St Johns Of God it is right in the middle of the Clane community. Funds are still required for specialised equipment and a small playground. Donabate, County DublinThere are plans for a new Angels Quest Home to be built in Donabate, County Dublin in 2007. This is the first home to be built in partnership with St Michaels House and it will also be the first Angels Quest home to be built on the Northside of Dublin where the demand for respite care is extremely high. Throughout next year we will be seeking sponsorship and funding for our new home in Donabate. There are opportunities to sponsor a room so that this new home can come on stream as soon as possible. You can also sponsor specialised equipment or a playground for this home. The Future:Radical advances in diagnostics, surgical intervention and treatment means there is a growing number of children with disabilities living longer and more meaningful lives at home with their loving families This is creating an unprecedented need for respite care – a support service which never existed in the past. Without respite care breaks, pressures build and, in many cases, lead to crisis or breakdown within the family sometimes resulting in children being placed in permanent residential care. This may not be a situation that parents had ever considered before and is a devastating outcome for all concerned. Angels Quest is committed to fundraising in order that more suitable home-from-home respite facilities are built throughout the island of Ireland. Through partnership with local service providers and the goodwill of the very many committed supporters of this cause it is our goal to be the catalyst for action. By putting money into bricks and mortar we can create permanent designated respite homes, which will support thousands of children and their families now and in the future.
